Background of the study
Community health education empowers individuals with knowledge and skills to prevent disease, promote healthy behaviors, and navigate healthcare systems (Nutbeam, 2023). Public libraries, as trusted community centers, can host health literacy workshops, curate consumer health collections, and partner with health agencies to disseminate accurate information (Johnson, 2024). In Umuahia North LGA, where public health challenges include malaria, hypertension, and maternal health concerns, libraries have begun collaborating with local clinics to offer seminars on disease prevention, nutrition, and reproductive health (Eze, 2025). International research demonstrates that library‑based health programs increase participants’ knowledge, improve health behaviors, and enhance service utilization (Smith, 2023). Yet, the reach and effectiveness of such initiatives in Umuahia North remain undocumented. Understanding how libraries contribute to community health education—through resource provision, programming, and partnerships—will inform strategies to strengthen health literacy and outcomes in the region (Ibrahim, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite the availability of health education events in public libraries, surveys in Umuahia North LGA reveal low attendance and persistent misinformation about common health issues (Okoro, 2025). Library staff cite challenges including limited funding for health materials, insufficient training in health communication, and weak collaboration with healthcare providers (Yakubu, 2024). Without systematic assessment of program design and community impact, libraries cannot optimize their role in supporting public health education.
Objectives of the study
To catalogue health education resources and programs offered by public libraries in Umuahia North LGA.
To assess the impact of these initiatives on community health knowledge and behaviors.
To recommend strategies for enhancing library‑based health education services.
Research questions
What health education services do public libraries in Umuahia North LGA provide?
How do these services influence community members’ health knowledge and practices?
What improvements can increase the effectiveness and reach of library health programs?
Significance of the study
This study will guide library managers, public health officials, and NGOs in leveraging libraries as platforms for community health education. By identifying best practices and addressing resource gaps, stakeholders can enhance health literacy, promote preventive behaviors, and improve health outcomes in Umuahia North LGA (Okeke, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses on public library health education programs in Umuahia North Local Government Area. It excludes school‑based health initiatives and clinical services. Limitations include potential self‑selection bias in participant feedback and evolving health priorities.
